Life is very mysterious and never knows where it is going to land. Companionship is even more inexplicable and only god knows how, when and where it is going to reveal in the life. Life is just like a video game; only programmer knows every loop, situation, action and event inside the game; whereas player has to play over and over again and spend lots of time to crack the game. However players enjoy each and every moments they spend to reach the final destination. God is the programmer of the earth and its inhabitants. We are playing the real game to reach the final destination and only god knows the end. Being a player of the game, I had played in various locations in Nepal till 20th level. 21st level onward, I have been playing in abroad; in search of my destiny. I was planning to go to India for my higher education but not yet decided. I was just thinking, whether to go or not. All of the sudden I got an unknown call from a maternal uncle, to whom I had never met earlier. He called me to tell about his nephew, who was also planning to go to India. He suggested me to go together as both of us were going abroad first time. On top of that both of us were thinking about the same place and the same subject. That coincidence helped me to determine my thinking. I talked with my family and decided to go to India. This decision gave me a new companion but deprived me of rest of my buddies.
We set out the voyage on 25th, May 1997 for Chennai, India. Our Kathmandu-Chennai journey routed through Kathmandu-Sunauli-Gorakhpur-Chennai. Means of travel: bus (Kathmandu-Gorakhpur) and train (Gorakhpur-Chennai Central). Travel time-3 days 3 nights; travel distance -3450 kilometers (Approximately). My Maternal uncle accompanied us till Gorakhpur. We stayed in Gorakhpur for a night. Early in the morning we boarded into the train (Raptisagar Express) and departed with my uncle; that was last company with a family member for a year, since I went back home after one year. Two novice started new journey with the departure sound of Raptisagar express. This is a longest trip I have ever made via train till now. That was a first time I had travelled by railways. However I had railways experience in Bhrikuti Mandap Bal Rail...lol…
Train departure made us nervous, panic, restless and uncomfortable. We had been thrown in the middle of nowhere. The train was very rush. People were moving around to find out their designated seat and to adjust their luggage. We were almost lost; just watching the activities going on around us. That hustle and bustle calmed down after an hour of travel. The entire passenger settled down. I felt relaxed and looked through the window. We were not much familiar to each other and speak only in case of need. The train was fully occupied; but none of them was known to me. I was bored and missing my buddies and their company. I felt asleep due to monotonous train sound and whistle; that landed me to a wonderful dream. It was really nice as I was surrounded by my friends and discussing about next trip to Annapurna base camp. All of the sudden I realized someone tugged my shirt from back; when I turned back, a small urchin was asking for money to have a food. In fact, it was a lunch time and my friend was pulling my blanket to awake me to order a lunch. Train staff was standing in front him to take an order. I placed my order and went back to sleep; hoping to revive left over dream.
After lunch, we roamed around the train. Train stopped at one of the pass through stations and passengers got off to stretch their leg and to get snacks/water. We got off too. It was almost 7 hrs non-stop drive. We got bottle of water and chips. We stayed out and talked for a while till train gave the departure signal. We kept continue our conversation inside the train as well. Basically we talked about our previous schools, friends and family. Moreover we got to know about our hobbies, interests and the reason to come to India etc. Three hours chat filled up the unknown gap between us and sowed a feeling of friendship. Proximity develops an environment to grow intimacy, whereas self-disclosure widens the scope of friendship. He was the only companion with whom I had to complete rest of the journey and vice versa. Perhaps could be a rest of Chennai stay. Frequent conversation, reading books/newspapers, sleeping whenever feel asleep (irrespective of day/night), roaming inside the train, getting out in every junction stop, enjoying typical locally grown/made snacks (every junction stop let peddler in the train to sell different stuff), listening music, playing cards, cracking jokes now and then, and an excitement to reach Chennai had enchanted the journey and ultimately landed in Chennai safely at 9:30PM local time.
We were lucky to have someone to receive us in the station. Binaya dai and PN dai came to pick up us and took us to their apartment. We stayed with them till we found our own apartment. I am very grateful to them, who guided us and supported us in a foreign land. After a week we found a new apartment and shifted there, which was a base camp for our overseas life in Chennai. It was struggle period in life to survive by own. We were completely out of comfort zone that reminded me the theory of “Survival of the fittest”. We were the mentor of our own life. Parents weren’t around us to feed; elders weren’t there to protect us and good friends weren’t there to suggest us. We were fully responsible for every act we do and we had to accept all the outcomes of the action. Our good or bad decision would be shaping rest of our life.
Hot climate, different food culture and paucity of good company made me home sick for a couple of weeks. I missed family and friends back home very badly. I feel very happy when I see Nepalese. When I meet Nepalese; I break the ice and introduce myself and start conversation. In this way I had become familiar with lots of Nepalese within short span of time. The presence of Nepalese in different fields including students was quite impressive. Every day, I used to meet Nepalese sometime, somewhere and that was beyond my expectation and imagination. I realized, knowing people and making friends are two sides of the coin. Talking with people, irrespective of the nationality, without mutual interest and common platform had been decreased gradually and stopped completely after the beginning of classes.
Class room happened to be a platform to make friends. Again, it is not possible to be a friend with everyone in the class; however we could be familiar with all of them. After the introduction session, I knew that there were six students from Nepal including two of us. After few days of formal conversation, we were quite comfortable with each other and started staying closely in the classroom. After a week, I clearly noticed the formation of various groups. North India group, Nepali group, South Indian group and so on. This is because of common interest, value and culture and that is natural. Even, our teachers noticed this trend and asked us to spread all over the class with different cultural group, but that had never happened, though we talk with each other quite often and exchange different cultural experience.
We need family and friends to make life happy. We would be in good shape at least if we have friends, since it is not possible to have family along with every corner of the life. Life became interesting and rich due to good circle of ally. During the semester, we mingled up with lot of guys from different part of India and Nepal. It was good to know people from cross-cultural group that helped to learn different cultural value/belief and of course, the different way of thinking. Thought is a vital key factor to drive a life. It totally depends on your contemplation to drive the life in right or wrong direction. Physical body is just a servant of the mind. And, our thoughts are being influence by the people around us and the environment we live. Think about happiness, success and good health and you will cause people to like you and desire to help you, because they enjoy the vibrations that positive mind emits. Positive thinking brings inner peace, success, improved relationships, better health, happiness and satisfaction. It also helps the daily affairs of life move more smoothly, and makes life look bright and promising. In order to make positive thinking yield results, you need to develop a positive attitude toward life, expect a successful outcome of whatever you do, but also take any necessary actions to ensure your success.
Time is a successful director of the life and it decides what I should have and shouldn’t have. During three yrs stay in Chennai, I happened to come close to so many people and got chances to spend enough time with some of them. By the time I left Chennai, I had limited but cherished friends, which came to existence after the three years of natural filtration with the pace of time. I am blessed to have friends like they, who had decorated my life and filled with joy and shared all good and bad time together in Chennai. They were my friends; they are my friends and will be friends for ever. I would like to dedicate Metamorphosis of friendship phase-3 to them, who are not close to me at this moment physically; however they are always in my heart and mind. Cheers my dear friends!!!!!!
